The Black + White Trifecta: Adding Red

Since the first Black and White Style post, I have been starting this series off with a relevant song. For B/W + Yellow, we consulted Mr. Wiz Khalifa. Now, let us change direction.

Enter the timeless musical, Les Miserables. You know, the play where everybody either dies tragically or basically gets their heart ripped out in an endless stream of life’s despair.

Now to our song: “Red. The color of desire. Black. The color of despair!”  Behold the eternal struggle: love (red) vs. revolution (black) and if you want a fun bonus Eddie Redmayne singing. Well cast these depressing woes away. Behold black, white and red style (which are much more uplifting than the song):

This space feels so light and elegant. Never underestimate the ambiance of a sheer, white curtain particularly when paired with this oversize, white mirror. I am really feeling the black, white and gray chevron, patterned pillows.

Does it make me terrible for wanting chandeliers above my kitchen island in my future, future space?  The black chandeliers dazzle under the criss-cross beamed ceiling and against the red, tile backdrop. The second island for seating is also a stunner, notice how just the curved sides and counter top are white.

You are not limited to B/W patterns to pull off this look. How cool is the white and red rug? This space is so eye-catching and feels personal. I love the black bookshelves on either side of the fireplace.

This Mediterranean kitchen also carries a country vibe with the wooden counters and white beamed ceiling. The red stools are the best.

My favorite thing about this dining alcove is the blown-up, B/W photographs which all carry highlights of red. Black and white photographs are some of the best and most meaningful decorations.

This space nails the B/W+R. The carpet and pattern is killer along with the lacquered black dresser with gold knobs. Shout out to Kips Bay where this place is, my old Manhattan neighborhood.

This room is more W+R and I think Lisa Vanderpump would live here if the curtains were light pink vs. red. And to me, that is a very positive compliment because that lady has awesome style.

One of my favorites. I am obsessed with the chandelier (Z Gallerie carries something similar) and the drapery.

THIS STOVE. This kitchen pulls off the definition of country chic through that metallic/white stove and hood, faded red island, B/W tile flooring and a matching back splash to boot.

So unique. This bedroom really has the textures going on. The L-shelves are so different above the red Plexiglas. We can’t forget that sheepskin comforter (go faux) with the red, leather pillows.

This kitchen is awesome. I am totally digging the red stove cushioned between black cabinets with RED HANDLES all against a back splash of pure white. YES!

This alcove is ultra romantic. I am not feeling the pillow with the sexual tension or the lip canister, but I do love everything else. Especially the tufted settee. You know I like the tufted things.

Check out the symmetry! This space is impressively chic by combining the red upholstery, crystal chandelier and eye-popping B/W wallpaper all under a black ceiling.

If your taste is more country home, red is ideal to your black and white. Red reminisces of a farmhouse or barn-inspired style. Not to mention, this would be the best kitchen ever to enjoy comfort food. Yes, I will take more mashed potatoes, thank you.

Hello my modern friends. You can certainly get in on the fun too! This high-polished, streamlined kitchen perfectly rocks the B/W+R vibe.

Could the corner, red leather bench be any cuter as it circles an adorable, old-school cafe table? No, it could not.

Close up. Use a painting as a focus point to pull the entire room together and play off every shade.

You don’t have to go totally B/W+R to sell the style. This kitchen uses all accessories in the scheme but has a variety of earth materials like brick and wood to round out the look. Get a load of that electric back splash!

And for my favorite image. I like how this room touts all different B/W patterns in the decor, chairs and pillows. The red is pulled in through various accessories, one more eclectic than the next. Notice how well metallics meld with the B/W+R scheme.

I will leave you with this. What is black, white and red all over? A newspaper! Get it?

Thanks for playing! Until next time,

Jenn

  1. Jenn you out did yourself with the black, white, red. Loved every photo. I’ve always been a fan of black & white but somewhat timid to decorate with these strong colors … Or not colors!
